SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Archie and Jughead. Archie is talking to Jughead. He tells Jughead that when he gets into his studies or when he begins studying for school, he is completely focused. He means that when he begins studying for school he doesn’t think about anything else. His mind is focused on his schoolwork. He is not thinking about anything else. He is completely focused on his studies. He is concentrating on his studies. In the second frame we see Archie’s dad sitting in a chair reading the newspaper. Archie continues to speak to Jughead. Archie tells Jughead that once he opens his textbook or his schoolbook, nothing can distract him. He means that once he opens his textbook or his schoolbook that nothing can take his attention away from it. He stays focused on the book. He will not look at or listen to anything else once he begins or ‘gets into’ his studies. In the third frame we see the joke! Since NOTHING can take Archie’s attention off his schoolbook once he starts studying, he wants to make sure that he has seen ALL the good TV shows before he starts his studies. He wants to make sure that he has watched all of the good TV shows BEFORE he opens his textbook or schoolbook! GLOSSARY 1. When I get into my studies - When Archie said this in frame one, he meant when he starts doing his schoolwork. When we say we “get into” something we mean that we get interested in something or we get involved in something. This is used when we are talking to our friends not in formal conversation. Sally is into yoga. (This means Sally is interested in yoga). Alysia is into collecting comic books. (This means Alysia is interested in collecting comic books.) 2. Completely – Completely means totally. Betty was completely embarrassed when Veronica told the new boy that she would go out on a date with him. Bob completely forgot to stop at the store on the way home from school. 3. Focused – When you are focused on what you are doing, you are paying careful attention to what you are doing. You are concentrating. Mr. Andrews was focused on the newspaper in frame two. In frame three, Mr. Andrews was distracted by Archie’s talking. 4. Textbook – A textbook is a book used by students in school Dilton liked reading his Science textbook. Moose didn’t like ANY textbooks. Moose would rather play football. 5. Distract – When you distract someone, you keep his or her mind from focusing on something. You can distract someone’s attention by making him or her look at or listen to something else. The music distracted us from our work. When Hot Dog came into the school it distracted all the kids! 6. Study – The use of the mind to learn something or the use of your brain to learn something. To study means to spend time reading and going to classes to learn about a subject She is going to study to be a doctor. Brigitte is studying in the library. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. Where are Jughead and Archie? Are they at school? How do you know? 2. What is Mr. Andrews doing? 3. Which is most important to Archie? His studies or watching good TV shows? How do you know? ANSWERS 1. Jughead and Archie are at Archie’s house. We know because Mr. Andrews (Archie’s dad) is there reading the paper. 2. Mr. Andrews is reading the newspaper. 3. I think that watching good TV shows is most important to Archie because he says he waits until ALL the good TV shows are over and then he starts to study. If he thought that studying was most important, he would do it first.
