SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Veronica, Archie and Jughead. They are talking. Veronica asks, “What do you think of the cookies?” Veronica is asking Archie and Jughead if they like the cookies that she made. Another way we could say this is to say that Veronica is asking Archie and Jughead if they like the cookies that she baked. When you bake something you cook it in an oven. Jughead answers Veronica by saying that once you start eating Veronica’s cookies you can’t stop eating them. When we say this we usually mean that the food is so good that we can’t stop eating it! We want more and more and more of it! We think that Jughead thinks the cookies are so good that he can’t stop eating them! In the second frame, Archie is whispering something to Jughead. Archie is whispering to Jughead because he does not want Veronica to hear what he is saying. Archie whispers softly to Jughead, “It was nice of you to say that!” Archie says this to Jughead because he thinks that when Jughead told Veronica that he couldn’t stop eating the cookies that he said it to be nice to Veronica or he said it to make Veronica feel good. But, in the third frame, we see the joke! Jughead tells Archie that he didn’t say he couldn’t stop eating Veronica’s cookies because they were good. And, he tells Archie that he didn’t say he couldn’t stop eating the cookies to be nice to Veronica. Jughead tells Archie that he couldn’t stop eating the cookies because he’s been chewing the same cookie for the past ten minutes! Oh my! Have you ever had to chew a cookie for ten minutes? GLOSSARY 1. Bake - When you bake something you cook it using dry heat. We often bake in an oven. Veronica baked cookies for Archie and Jughead. The recipe says to bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. 2. Oven - An oven is a piece of equipment that food is cooked inside. It is shaped like a metal box with a door on the front. Please turn the oven on so I can bake the cookies. Veronica put the cookies in the oven to bake. 3. Cook - To cook food means to prepare the food for eating by using heat. I am cooking hamburgers for dinner. He is cooking rice for dinner. 4. Hot - Something that is hot has a high temperature – We can use the word hot when we are talking about weather, places, food, drink, or objects. To bake the cookies, Veronica set the temperature of the oven to 350 degrees. When the cookies were done baking Veronica got them out of the oven. The cookies were hot! Be careful. Don’t burn your mouth on the hot cookies! 5. Plate - A plate is a flat and usually round dish that you eat from or serve food on. Veronica put the cookies on a plate. I will put your hamburger on a plate. 6. Cookies - Cookies are small flat sweet cakes. I love to eat chocolate chip cookies. My favorites! Poor Jughead. He had to chew one bite of Veronica’s cookie for 10 minutes! 7. Chew - To chew food means to bite the food several times before swallowing it. Jughead said that he has been chewing Veronica’s cookie for 10 minutes. The meat was so tough that Archie had a hard time chewing it. Chewing the tough meat was not easy. 8. True - When something is true it is based on facts. It is real. It is not pretend. Betty said that is was true. She did love Archie. Jughead said it is true. He can’t stop eating Veronica’s cookies. 9. Recipe - A recipe is a set of instructions for cooking a particular type of food I think Veronica needs a new recipe for cookies. I have a recipe for brownies. A brownie is a thick flat chocolate cake.   COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What did Veronica bake? 2. Look closely at Jughead’s cookie. Has he been chewing on very much of the cookie for 10 minutes? 3. Do you think that Jughead likes the cookies the Veronica baked? How can you tell? ANSWERS 1.Veronica baked cookies. 2.No. Jughead has only been chewing on one bite of the cookie. 3. I don’t think that Jughead likes the cookie. He is not smiling. ***Teachers: There are some additional comic covers with related vocabulary words that I use with my students in the Learning Guide. I print out the covers and then we talk about what’s happening in them. Students take turns describing the pictures and telling what is going on. They take turns telling the story!
