TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic we see Veronica and Archie. They are outside. They are probably in Veronica’s yard. Veronica is cooking hamburgers on the grill. Veronica is giving Archie one of the hamburgers. She is putting a hamburger on Archie’s plate. In the second frame, we see Jughead sitting down eating his hamburger and drinking a drink. Veronica yells to Archie. She says, “Wait Archie! Come back!” Archie wonders what Veronica wants. He wonders why Veronica is yelling for him to come back In the third frame, Veronica says that she thinks she made a mistake. She thinks she did something wrong! Now we see the joke! Veronica says that she thinks she gave Archie a charcoal briquette instead of a hamburger!! Hmmmm… how could Veronica mistake a charcoal briquette for a hamburger? She sure must have burned the hamburgers if they looked just like a charcoal briquette! GLOSSARY 1. Grill – (noun) – A grill is a flat frame with metal bars across it that can be put over a fire, so that food can be cooked on it. Veronica is cooking the hamburgers on the grill. We put the food on the grill to cook. 2. Grill – (verb) – When you grill something this means that you are cooking it on a grill. We will grill the meat for dinner. Bobby likes to grill steaks. 3. Overcook – To cook something means to make food ready for eating by heating it. If you OVER cook something it means that you cooked it for too long. You overcooked it. Sometimes when you overcook food it burns. Veronica overcooked the hamburgers. The hamburgers were no longer tasty. They were burned. Veronica said that she was tired of people suggesting (or saying) that she overcooks the food. 4. Charcoal briquette – Charcoal briquettes are little blocks of charcoal used for grilling or cooking food. Aaron put the meat on the grill when the charcoal briquettes were hot. Veronica accidentally put a charcoal briquette on Archie’s hamburger bun instead of putting a hamburger on the bun! YUCK! 5. Mistake – A mistake is something that is done in the wrong way. When you make a mistake, you do something wrong. Something is not right or correct. Veronica put the charcoal briquette on Archie’s plate by mistake. The football player made a mistake when he passed the football to the wrong team. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What season is it in the comic? 2. What does Veronica say she is tired of? 3. Veronica has probably overcooked the hamburgers. How do you know? ANSWERS 1. It is summer. We can tell by the clothes that Veronica, Archie and Jughead are wearing. Jughead and Archie are wearing short pants or what we would just call, shorts. They are all wearing shirts with short sleeves. They are not wearing jackets. We know that it must be hot outside . Since it is hot outside it is probably summer. 2. Veronica is tired of people always saying that she burns the food she cooks. 3. We know that Veronica has overcooked the food because she cannot tell the difference between one of her hamburgers and a black charcoal briquette. She has overcooked the meat so much that it is burned and looks just like a black charcoal briquette!

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic we see 4 people – Mr. Lodge, Veronica, Archie and Betty. The people are in Veronica’s house. Veronica says to Mr. Lodge, “Archie’s back from vacation, daddy!” Mr. Lodge is Veronica’s daddy. Father and daddy mean the same thing. We could also say that Mr. Lodge is Veronica’s dad. Dad is the shortened form of the word daddy. Daddy, dad and father all mean the same thing. Mr. Lodge says, “Joy”. Usually the word joy means that we are happy about something. Joy can mean that we are excited about something. Hmmmm look at Mr. Lodge’s face. Does he look happy or excited? Does he look joyful or full of joy? No, he does not look happy. He does not look excited. He does not look joyful. Mr. Lodge does not look like he is happy that Archie is back from his vacation. Mr. Lodge does not look happy that Archie has come home from his vacation. Next, Betty asks Archie, “Did you have fun?” Betty wants to know if Archie had fun on his vacation. She wants to know if Archie had a good time on his vacation. In the second frame, Archie is talking. He says “I have to say the old cliché is true: There’s no place like home!” A cliché is an idea or phrase that has been used so much that it does not have any meaning any longer. The cliché that Archie used was, “There’s no place like home”. “There’s no place like home” means that nothing compares to the comfort of being in your house. You feel really good when you are in your own home. Archie has been away on vacation. He had a good time on his vacation BUT he was really happy when he got home. Archie said there is no place like his home. In the last frame we see the joke! We see Archie, Veronica and Betty in the third frame but we do not see Mr. Lodge. Mr. Lodge is not in the picture. He is in another room of the house. Mr. Lodge calls out to Archie, “Then go there!” Ok, I hope you ‘get’ or understand the joke! You see, Mr. Lodge doesn’t like Archie and when Archie says that there is no place like home, Mr. Lodge tells him to go there. Mr. Lodge wants Archie to go home. Mr. Lodge wants Archie to go to his own home!

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic we see Jughead. He is cooking food at Pop’s restaurant. He is holding a basket of food - probably French fries. French fries are long thin pieces of potato that have been cooked in hot oil. Jughead is holding the basket of food in his hand as he talks to Archie. We know that Jughead is working in Pop’s restaurant by clothing that he is wearing. His clothes are what we might call his ‘work uniform’. These are clothes that he only wears when he works at the restaurant. We also know that Jughead is in a restaurant by the pictures on the walls. There are pictures of food on the walls. So, in this first frame, Jughead is telling Archie that he, meaning Archie, is right. He says that Archie is right about the company motto. The company’s motto or the restaurant’s motto is “customer satisfaction”. A motto is a short sentence or phrase giving a rule on how to live or how to act or how to behave. The motto or the phrase is used to tell the beliefs of a company – the motto tells what the company thinks or believes is important. A motto is a short sentence or phrase that is used as a rule to live by. Here is a motto that I’ve heard. It goes like this: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step”. I think that this is a good motto to think about or to remember when you are trying to learn English!! Learning English may seem like a very hard thing to do. It may feel like it is going to take a very long, long time for you to learn English. Learning English may seem like a big or a huge task BUT (and this is the important part of the motto) the motto says the way to do something that seems like it is a really big job or the way to do something that seems like it is very hard to do is to begin with one small step. And then, one step at a time – everyday – step-by-step, you get a little better…and better… and better. One small step at a time. The journey of a thousand miles or we could say that the learning of English begins with one small step! OK, let’s continue! In the second frame we see Jughead. His eyes are closed. He appears to be listening to Archie. Archie is telling Jughead that he is doing his best to live up to the company motto. Archie means that he is doing his best to DO what the company motto says. We discovered in frame one that the company motto is “customer satisfaction”. A customer is someone who buys something at a store or in this case, at Pop’s restaurant. Satisfaction means feeling happy or pleased. Customer satisfaction means that the customer or the person who bought the food is happy or pleased. The customer has had a pleasant time in the restaurant. The customer thought that the food tasted good. The customer is satisfied or happy. In the third frame we see the joke. We know that the company motto, “customer satisfaction” means that the customer is supposed to be pleased with the food that they buy or eat at the restaurant. In the last frame we see Archie kissing a girl. Archie says he is keeping the customer, the girl, happy or satisfied by kissing her! Pop Tate (the person who owns the restaurant) comes running toward or to Archie saying that the company motto refers to the food, Archie Andrews – not kissing the girls!!

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the 1st frame of today’s comic, 3 people are talking - two girls and one boy. The two girls are sitting. The boy is standing. Betty’s friend says, "Archie loves having a convertible!" A convertible is a car whose roof or top can be folded back. A convertible is a car with a soft roof that you can fold back or remove. Reggie, who is always being what we might call a joker, says that it is too bad that Archie can’t convert or change his convertible into a real car. Reggie means that Archie’s car isn’t any good. It is not a good car. Reggie says that the hood of Archie’s car is always up – meaning that the hood of Archie’s car is always open. The hood of a car is the metal covering over the engine of a car. The hood of Archie’s car is always up because Archie has to work on his car a lot. Archie’s car is broken down or Archie’s car stops working a lot. When his car stops working, Archie lifts up the hood of the car and begins to work on the car’s engine. GLOSSARY 1. Metal – Metal is a hard, usually shiny substance such as iron, gold, or steel The gate at Veronica’s house is metal. The chair is metal. 2. Broken down – Broken down means not working or in very bad condition Veronica would never drive a broken down car. Archie drove his broken down car to school. 3. Hood – A hood is the metal covering over the engine on a car Check under the hood and see what that noise is. The hood of Archie’s car is always up. 4. Roof – a roof is the top part of a car or a building The cat was on the roof of the car. The roof of my car was wet. 5. Remove – Remove means to take off I can remove the roof of my convertible. Archie removed the top from his car. 6. Which – Which car is his? – The word, “which” asks a question. Which car is his? Which is used to ask about one member of a group of things. There was a group of cars and the girl asked Betty, “Which car is Archie’s car?” Which one of the cars is Archie’s? Which book are you looking for? Which color of ribbon should Betty wear in her hair? 7. Joker - A joker is someone who makes a lot of jokes (A joke - something that you say or do to make people laugh) Reggie is a joker. The joker made us laugh! COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What does Archie love having? 2. Why is the hood of Archie’s car up in frame three? 3. Where are the two girls and Reggie? Answers 1. Archie loves having a convertible. 2. The hood of Archie’s car is always up because Archie’s car is always broken down. 3. The two girls and Reggie are in Pop’s restaurant.
