SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Jughead and Archie. Jughead is sitting at his computer. Archie is holding an ad or an advertisement in his hand. The advertisement that Archie is holding shows picture of a man wearing a lightweight telephone headset. An ad or an advertisement is used to persuade someone to buy something. Archie tells Jughead to look at the ad. In the second frame of the comic Archie tells Jughead that he can work on his computer and still talk on his cell phone or he can type on his keyboard and at the same time talk on his cell phone – hands free. Hands free means he won’t have to use his hands to hold his cell phone. His hands will be free to type on his computer keyboard. Jughead answers by saying “Wow!” It looks like Jughead thinks this headset is a good idea! In the last frame we see the joke. I’ve got to tell you that I think this comic is so funny! I mean, look at Jughead. He has his cell phone taped to his head!! That is so funny to me. Well, back to the comic. In this last frame we see that Jughead likes the idea of the lightweight telephone headset because if he buys one he won’t have to tape his cell phone to his head any more! GLOSSARY 1. Persuade - Persuade means to make someone decide to do something, especially by giving them reasons why they should do it. Veronica tried to persuade Betty to get her hair cut. In other words, Veronica tried to get Betty to cut her hair. Archie used the ad to persuade Jughead to buy the new headset. 2. Ad - Ad is the shortened form of the word advertisement. An advertisement is a picture or a set of words or a short film which is used to persuade someone to buy something. In the ad the girls were drinking Coke. What was the ad trying to sell? The ad was selling or the ad was trying to persuade you to buy Coke. The Sunday newspaper is full of ads for cars. 3. Lightweight – When something is lightweight it weighs less than average or it does not weigh as much as it usually does. The shelf was made of lightweight plastic. The headset shown in the ad was lightweight. This means it did not weigh very much. It was light - not heavy. 4. Hands free – When something is hands free it means you can use it without using your hands. A hands free machine is one that you can use without using your hands. When I was a little girl I would sometimes ride my bike hands free for a short time. When I did this I would holler to my mom, “Look, mom! No hands!” meaning look at me mom, I’m riding my bike hands free! 5. Duct tape – Duct tape is sticky on one side and is used to stick things together Jughead held his phone on his head with duct tape. He had the phone taped to his head. Ouch! Duct tape can be used to fix or repair many things. 6. Headset – A headset is a set of headphones, often with a microphone attached. The ad showed a man wearing a lightweight headset. When I am at work I wear a headset. 7. Cell phone – a cellular telephone. Betty called Veronica on her cell phone. “Call me later on my cell phone!” Archie yelled to Cheryl. 8. Computer – A computer is an electronic machine that stores information and uses programs to help you find, organize, or change the information. A message flashed on Dilton’s computer screen. I am typing this Learning Guide on my computer. 9. Keyboard - A keyboard is a board with buttons marked with letters or numbers that are pressed to put information into a computer. I am typing using a keyboard. The keyboard in the picture is white. My keyboard is black. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What is Archie holding in his hand in the first frame? 2. What could Jughead do if he had the new lightweight telephone headset? 3. Do you think Jughead will buy the new headset? Why or why not? ANSWERS 1. In the first frame Archie is holding an advertisement for a lightweight telephone headset. 2. If Jughead had the headset he could talk on his phone and type on his computer at the same time. 3. I think Jughead WILL buy the new headset. I think it would hurt when he took the cell phone off his head because of the sticky tape so I think he would like the new headset. SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Jughead, Betty and Veronica. Look in the closet behind Jughead. Jughead has taken off his hat and he has placed it on the shelf in the closet. He is holding a helmet in his hands. Jughead must have taken off his hat so that he could put on the helmet. Look at Jughead’s clothing. He is wearing some unusual clothing! Betty and Veronica look like they are confused. In the second frame Betty says to Veronica, “I didn’t know Jughead was on the hockey team.” Veronica answers her by saying, “He’s not!” meaning that Jughead is not on the hockey team. In the last frame we see the joke. We see WHY Jughead put on the helmet and why he was wearing the unusual clothes. Jughead is Archie’s lab partner! I think Jughead is afraid that something is going to go wrong in the lab! GLOSSARY 1. Closet - A closet is a cupboard built into the wall of a room from the floor to the ceiling Jughead put his hat in the closet. Veronica has a closet full of beautiful clothes. 2. Shelf - A shelf is a long flat narrow board attached to a wall or in a cupboard. A shelf is used for putting things on. Please put the book on the shelf. Jughead put his hat on the shelf in the closet. 3. Helmet – A helmet is a strong hard hat that soldiers, motorcycle riders, and police often wear to protect their heads. Jughead is going to wear a helmet to class because he is Archie’s lab partner and he is afraid he might get hurt! It is a good idea to wear a helmet when you ride a motorcycle. 4. Clothes – Clothes are the things that people wear to cover their body or to keep warm. Betty dressed in warm clothes because it was really cold outside. Veronica enjoys going to the mall to shop for clothes. 5. Wearing – When you wear something it means that you have something such as clothes or shoes on your body: What kind of clothes was Jughead wearing? I am wearing blue jeans and a pink sweater. 6. Unusual - Unusual means different from what is usual or normal Aly had on an unusual hat. Veronica got an unusual gift from Archie for Valentine’s Day. (You can read about it in her blog at http://archiecomicblogs.typepad.com/bettys_blog/ ) 7. Confused – When someone is confused they are unable to understand something or are unable to think clearly about what is going on Betty and Veronica were confused about Jughead putting on a hockey helmet. Moose was confused in algebra class. 8. Hockey team – Hockey is a sport played on ice. In the game, the players try to hit a hard flat round object called a puck into the other team’s goal with special sticks. A team is a group of people who play a game or sport together against another group or team Betty and Veronica thought that Jughead was getting dressed to play hockey. Aaron plays on a hockey team. 9. Lab partner – Lab is a shortened form of the word, laboratory. A laboratory is a special room or a building where a scientist does tests. In the last frame of today’s comic Archie is pictured in a high school lab. A partner is someone you do an activity with, for example you may be doing an experiment with someone in a science lab. Jughead is Archie’s lab partner. They are doing a science experiment or test together in the high school science lab. Veronica did not want to be Reggie’s lab partner. 10. Behind - Behind means at or towards the back of a thing or person. In the first frame of the comic, the closet is behind Jughead. In the second frame of the comic, Betty and Veronica are behind Jughead. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. Why did Jughead take his hat off and put it in the closet? 2. Is Jughead on the hockey team? How do you know? 3. Where is Archie in the last frame? ANSWERS 1. Jughead took his hat off and put it in the closet so he could put on the helmet. 2. Jughead is not on the hockey team. We know because Veronica said so in the second frame. 3. Archie is in the high school science lab.

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Archie, Reggie and Hot Dog. Reggie is giving Hot Dog a command. When you give a person or an animal a command you are telling the person or animal to do something. Reggie is telling Hot Dog to sit. He says, “Hot Dog! Sit!” Hot Dog looks at Reggie but does not sit. In the second frame of the comic we see Hot Dog walking away from Reggie and Jughead. Reggie is talking to Jughead. He tells Jughead that his dog is dumb. He means that the Hot Dog is not a smart dog. Reggie tells Jughead that his dog is so dumb that he cannot even follow a simple command. Hot Dog cannot do the easy thing that he has been told to do. Reggie says that Hot Dog did not sit down like he was told but he just walked away! In the third frame we see the joke! Jughead tells Reggie that he has to have patience. To have patience means to calmly wait. Jughead tells Reggie that he has to give Hot Dog a chance or he has to give Hot Dog some time to follow the commands. In this last frame we see Hot Dog pushing a chair toward Jughead and Reggie. Hmmmm… Do you think that Hot Dog is gonna sit down on the chair? Do you think that Hot Dog didn’t want to sit on the floor so he got a chair to sit on? It looks like Hot Dog IS going to follow the command that Reggie gave him! He just wanted to get a chair to sit on. Now THAT is a smart dog! GLOSSARY 1. Command - When you give a command you are telling someone to do something. A command is an order that should be obeyed. The teacher commanded, “Do not talk in the classroom”. Mrs. Jones commanded Jughead to take Hot Dog out for a walk. 2. Sit – to be on a chair or seat, or on the ground, with the top half of your body upright and your weight resting on your buttocks Cheryl is sitting on a chair. The chair that Cheryl is sitting on is tan. (Tan is a color. It is a light brown color.) 3. Away from – When we say that Hot Dog moved away from Reggie and Jughead we mean that he moved far from them. Hot Dog has NOT moved towards them. He didn’t move TO them, he moved away from them. The red arrow is pointing towards Hot Dog. The green arrow is pointing away from Hot Dog. 4. Dumb – Stupid. Not very smart. Dilton is not dumb. He is very smart. Betty is not a dumb blonde. (When we say “dumb blond” we are talking about a pretty girl or woman with blonde hair who seems stupid). 5. Follow a command – When you follow a command you do what you are told. When you follow a command you do something in the way that someone has told you to do it. Follow the instructions carefully when filling out the form. Follow Veronica’s plan. 6. Simple – Something that is simple is not difficult or complicated to do or understand. It is easy to do or understand. Some people think it is simple to use a computer. Do you think so? Do you think that learning English is simple? I don’t think it is! 7. Patience - When we tell someone to have patience we are telling him or her to be calm. We are telling them not to be excited, nervous, or upset. Jughead told Reggie to have patience while he waited for Hot Dog. The man in the car tried to remain patient or calm while he waited for the cars to start moving again. He was in a traffic jam. A traffic jam is a long line of vehicles on a road that cannot move or can only move very slowly. 8. Chance – To give someone a chance means to give the person TIME to do something or an opportunity to do something. “I didn’t have a chance to eat lunch today” whined Jughead. Veronica didn’t have a chance to do her homework because she was busy at the shoe sale at Lacy’s store. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. Who is speaking in the first frame? 2. Why did Hot Dog walk away from Jughead and Reggie in frame two? 3. Have you ever been in a traffic jam? Did you have patience or we could say, were you patient? ANSWERS 1. Reggie is speaking to Hot Dog in the first frame. 2. Hot Dog walked away because he was going to get a chair to sit on. 3. Yes, I have been in a traffic jam. I was able to be patient.

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Archie and Jughead. Archie is talking to Jughead. He tells Jughead that when he gets into his studies or when he begins studying for school, he is completely focused. He means that when he begins studying for school he doesn’t think about anything else. His mind is focused on his schoolwork. He is not thinking about anything else. He is completely focused on his studies. He is concentrating on his studies. In the second frame we see Archie’s dad sitting in a chair reading the newspaper. Archie continues to speak to Jughead. Archie tells Jughead that once he opens his textbook or his schoolbook, nothing can distract him. He means that once he opens his textbook or his schoolbook that nothing can take his attention away from it. He stays focused on the book. He will not look at or listen to anything else once he begins or ‘gets into’ his studies. In the third frame we see the joke! Since NOTHING can take Archie’s attention off his schoolbook once he starts studying, he wants to make sure that he has seen ALL the good TV shows before he starts his studies. He wants to make sure that he has watched all of the good TV shows BEFORE he opens his textbook or schoolbook! GLOSSARY 1. When I get into my studies - When Archie said this in frame one, he meant when he starts doing his schoolwork. When we say we “get into” something we mean that we get interested in something or we get involved in something. This is used when we are talking to our friends not in formal conversation. Sally is into yoga. (This means Sally is interested in yoga). Alysia is into collecting comic books. (This means Alysia is interested in collecting comic books.) 2. Completely – Completely means totally. Betty was completely embarrassed when Veronica told the new boy that she would go out on a date with him. Bob completely forgot to stop at the store on the way home from school. 3. Focused – When you are focused on what you are doing, you are paying careful attention to what you are doing. You are concentrating. Mr. Andrews was focused on the newspaper in frame two. In frame three, Mr. Andrews was distracted by Archie’s talking. 4. Textbook – A textbook is a book used by students in school Dilton liked reading his Science textbook. Moose didn’t like ANY textbooks. Moose would rather play football. 5. Distract – When you distract someone, you keep his or her mind from focusing on something. You can distract someone’s attention by making him or her look at or listen to something else. The music distracted us from our work. When Hot Dog came into the school it distracted all the kids! 6. Study – The use of the mind to learn something or the use of your brain to learn something. To study means to spend time reading and going to classes to learn about a subject She is going to study to be a doctor. Brigitte is studying in the library. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. Where are Jughead and Archie? Are they at school? How do you know? 2. What is Mr. Andrews doing? 3. Which is most important to Archie? His studies or watching good TV shows? How do you know? ANSWERS 1. Jughead and Archie are at Archie’s house. We know because Mr. Andrews (Archie’s dad) is there reading the paper. 2. Mr. Andrews is reading the newspaper. 3. I think that watching good TV shows is most important to Archie because he says he waits until ALL the good TV shows are over and then he starts to study. If he thought that studying was most important, he would do it first.

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic, we see Veronica, Archie and Jughead. They are talking. Veronica asks, “What do you think of the cookies?” Veronica is asking Archie and Jughead if they like the cookies that she made. Another way we could say this is to say that Veronica is asking Archie and Jughead if they like the cookies that she baked. When you bake something you cook it in an oven. Jughead answers Veronica by saying that once you start eating Veronica’s cookies you can’t stop eating them. When we say this we usually mean that the food is so good that we can’t stop eating it! We want more and more and more of it! We think that Jughead thinks the cookies are so good that he can’t stop eating them! In the second frame, Archie is whispering something to Jughead. Archie is whispering to Jughead because he does not want Veronica to hear what he is saying. Archie whispers softly to Jughead, “It was nice of you to say that!” Archie says this to Jughead because he thinks that when Jughead told Veronica that he couldn’t stop eating the cookies that he said it to be nice to Veronica or he said it to make Veronica feel good. But, in the third frame, we see the joke! Jughead tells Archie that he didn’t say he couldn’t stop eating Veronica’s cookies because they were good. And, he tells Archie that he didn’t say he couldn’t stop eating the cookies to be nice to Veronica. Jughead tells Archie that he couldn’t stop eating the cookies because he’s been chewing the same cookie for the past ten minutes! Oh my! Have you ever had to chew a cookie for ten minutes? GLOSSARY 1. Bake - When you bake something you cook it using dry heat. We often bake in an oven. Veronica baked cookies for Archie and Jughead. The recipe says to bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. 2. Oven - An oven is a piece of equipment that food is cooked inside. It is shaped like a metal box with a door on the front. Please turn the oven on so I can bake the cookies. Veronica put the cookies in the oven to bake. 3. Cook - To cook food means to prepare the food for eating by using heat. I am cooking hamburgers for dinner. He is cooking rice for dinner. 4. Hot - Something that is hot has a high temperature – We can use the word hot when we are talking about weather, places, food, drink, or objects. To bake the cookies, Veronica set the temperature of the oven to 350 degrees. When the cookies were done baking Veronica got them out of the oven. The cookies were hot! Be careful. Don’t burn your mouth on the hot cookies! 5. Plate - A plate is a flat and usually round dish that you eat from or serve food on. Veronica put the cookies on a plate. I will put your hamburger on a plate. 6. Cookies - Cookies are small flat sweet cakes. I love to eat chocolate chip cookies. My favorites! Poor Jughead. He had to chew one bite of Veronica’s cookie for 10 minutes! 7. Chew - To chew food means to bite the food several times before swallowing it. Jughead said that he has been chewing Veronica’s cookie for 10 minutes. The meat was so tough that Archie had a hard time chewing it. Chewing the tough meat was not easy. 8. True - When something is true it is based on facts. It is real. It is not pretend. Betty said that is was true. She did love Archie. Jughead said it is true. He can’t stop eating Veronica’s cookies. 9. Recipe - A recipe is a set of instructions for cooking a particular type of food I think Veronica needs a new recipe for cookies. I have a recipe for brownies. A brownie is a thick flat chocolate cake.   COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What did Veronica bake? 2. Look closely at Jughead’s cookie. Has he been chewing on very much of the cookie for 10 minutes? 3. Do you think that Jughead likes the cookies the Veronica baked? How can you tell? ANSWERS 1.Veronica baked cookies. 2.No. Jughead has only been chewing on one bite of the cookie. 3. I don’t think that Jughead likes the cookie. He is not smiling. ***Teachers: There are some additional comic covers with related vocabulary words that I use with my students in the Learning Guide. I print out the covers and then we talk about what’s happening in them. Students take turns describing the pictures and telling what is going on. They take turns telling the story! TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic we see Veronica and Archie. They are outside. They are probably in Veronica’s yard. Veronica is cooking hamburgers on the grill. Veronica is giving Archie one of the hamburgers. She is putting a hamburger on Archie’s plate. In the second frame, we see Jughead sitting down eating his hamburger and drinking a drink. Veronica yells to Archie. She says, “Wait Archie! Come back!” Archie wonders what Veronica wants. He wonders why Veronica is yelling for him to come back In the third frame, Veronica says that she thinks she made a mistake. She thinks she did something wrong! Now we see the joke! Veronica says that she thinks she gave Archie a charcoal briquette instead of a hamburger!! Hmmmm… how could Veronica mistake a charcoal briquette for a hamburger? She sure must have burned the hamburgers if they looked just like a charcoal briquette! GLOSSARY 1. Grill – (noun) – A grill is a flat frame with metal bars across it that can be put over a fire, so that food can be cooked on it. Veronica is cooking the hamburgers on the grill. We put the food on the grill to cook. 2. Grill – (verb) – When you grill something this means that you are cooking it on a grill. We will grill the meat for dinner. Bobby likes to grill steaks. 3. Overcook – To cook something means to make food ready for eating by heating it. If you OVER cook something it means that you cooked it for too long. You overcooked it. Sometimes when you overcook food it burns. Veronica overcooked the hamburgers. The hamburgers were no longer tasty. They were burned. Veronica said that she was tired of people suggesting (or saying) that she overcooks the food. 4. Charcoal briquette – Charcoal briquettes are little blocks of charcoal used for grilling or cooking food. Aaron put the meat on the grill when the charcoal briquettes were hot. Veronica accidentally put a charcoal briquette on Archie’s hamburger bun instead of putting a hamburger on the bun! YUCK! 5. Mistake – A mistake is something that is done in the wrong way. When you make a mistake, you do something wrong. Something is not right or correct. Veronica put the charcoal briquette on Archie’s plate by mistake. The football player made a mistake when he passed the football to the wrong team. COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What season is it in the comic? 2. What does Veronica say she is tired of? 3. Veronica has probably overcooked the hamburgers. How do you know? ANSWERS 1. It is summer. We can tell by the clothes that Veronica, Archie and Jughead are wearing. Jughead and Archie are wearing short pants or what we would just call, shorts. They are all wearing shirts with short sleeves. They are not wearing jackets. We know that it must be hot outside . Since it is hot outside it is probably summer. 2. Veronica is tired of people always saying that she burns the food she cooks. 3. We know that Veronica has overcooked the food because she cannot tell the difference between one of her hamburgers and a black charcoal briquette. She has overcooked the meat so much that it is burned and looks just like a black charcoal briquette!

  ESL and Archie #41 - There’s no place like home!

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic we see 4 people – Mr. Lodge, Veronica, Archie and Betty. The people are in Veronica’s house. Veronica says to Mr. Lodge, “Archie’s back from vacation, daddy!” Mr. Lodge is Veronica’s daddy. Father and daddy mean the same thing. We could also say that Mr. Lodge is Veronica’s dad. Dad is the shortened form of the word daddy. Daddy, dad and father all mean the same thing. Mr. Lodge says, “Joy”. Usually the word joy means that we are happy about something. Joy can mean that we are excited about something. Hmmmm look at Mr. Lodge’s face. Does he look happy or excited? Does he look joyful or full of joy? No, he does not look happy. He does not look excited. He does not look joyful. Mr. Lodge does not look like he is happy that Archie is back from his vacation. Mr. Lodge does not look happy that Archie has come home from his vacation. Next, Betty asks Archie, “Did you have fun?” Betty wants to know if Archie had fun on his vacation. She wants to know if Archie had a good time on his vacation. In the second frame, Archie is talking. He says “I have to say the old cliché is true: There’s no place like home!” A cliché is an idea or phrase that has been used so much that it does not have any meaning any longer. The cliché that Archie used was, “There’s no place like home”. “There’s no place like home” means that nothing compares to the comfort of being in your house. You feel really good when you are in your own home. Archie has been away on vacation. He had a good time on his vacation BUT he was really happy when he got home. Archie said there is no place like his home. In the last frame we see the joke! We see Archie, Veronica and Betty in the third frame but we do not see Mr. Lodge. Mr. Lodge is not in the picture. He is in another room of the house. Mr. Lodge calls out to Archie, “Then go there!” Ok, I hope you ‘get’ or understand the joke! You see, Mr. Lodge doesn’t like Archie and when Archie says that there is no place like home, Mr. Lodge tells him to go there. Mr. Lodge wants Archie to go home. Mr. Lodge wants Archie to go to his own home!

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the first frame of today’s comic we see Jughead. He is cooking food at Pop’s restaurant. He is holding a basket of food - probably French fries. French fries are long thin pieces of potato that have been cooked in hot oil. Jughead is holding the basket of food in his hand as he talks to Archie. We know that Jughead is working in Pop’s restaurant by clothing that he is wearing. His clothes are what we might call his ‘work uniform’. These are clothes that he only wears when he works at the restaurant. We also know that Jughead is in a restaurant by the pictures on the walls. There are pictures of food on the walls. So, in this first frame, Jughead is telling Archie that he, meaning Archie, is right. He says that Archie is right about the company motto. The company’s motto or the restaurant’s motto is “customer satisfaction”. A motto is a short sentence or phrase giving a rule on how to live or how to act or how to behave. The motto or the phrase is used to tell the beliefs of a company – the motto tells what the company thinks or believes is important. A motto is a short sentence or phrase that is used as a rule to live by. Here is a motto that I’ve heard. It goes like this: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step”. I think that this is a good motto to think about or to remember when you are trying to learn English!! Learning English may seem like a very hard thing to do. It may feel like it is going to take a very long, long time for you to learn English. Learning English may seem like a big or a huge task BUT (and this is the important part of the motto) the motto says the way to do something that seems like it is a really big job or the way to do something that seems like it is very hard to do is to begin with one small step. And then, one step at a time – everyday – step-by-step, you get a little better…and better… and better. One small step at a time. The journey of a thousand miles or we could say that the learning of English begins with one small step! OK, let’s continue! In the second frame we see Jughead. His eyes are closed. He appears to be listening to Archie. Archie is telling Jughead that he is doing his best to live up to the company motto. Archie means that he is doing his best to DO what the company motto says. We discovered in frame one that the company motto is “customer satisfaction”. A customer is someone who buys something at a store or in this case, at Pop’s restaurant. Satisfaction means feeling happy or pleased. Customer satisfaction means that the customer or the person who bought the food is happy or pleased. The customer has had a pleasant time in the restaurant. The customer thought that the food tasted good. The customer is satisfied or happy. In the third frame we see the joke. We know that the company motto, “customer satisfaction” means that the customer is supposed to be pleased with the food that they buy or eat at the restaurant. In the last frame we see Archie kissing a girl. Archie says he is keeping the customer, the girl, happy or satisfied by kissing her! Pop Tate (the person who owns the restaurant) comes running toward or to Archie saying that the company motto refers to the food, Archie Andrews – not kissing the girls!!

SPANISH COMIC TRANSCRIPT In the 1st frame of today’s comic, 3 people are talking - two girls and one boy. The two girls are sitting. The boy is standing. Betty’s friend says, "Archie loves having a convertible!" A convertible is a car whose roof or top can be folded back. A convertible is a car with a soft roof that you can fold back or remove. Reggie, who is always being what we might call a joker, says that it is too bad that Archie can’t convert or change his convertible into a real car. Reggie means that Archie’s car isn’t any good. It is not a good car. Reggie says that the hood of Archie’s car is always up – meaning that the hood of Archie’s car is always open. The hood of a car is the metal covering over the engine of a car. The hood of Archie’s car is always up because Archie has to work on his car a lot. Archie’s car is broken down or Archie’s car stops working a lot. When his car stops working, Archie lifts up the hood of the car and begins to work on the car’s engine. GLOSSARY 1. Metal – Metal is a hard, usually shiny substance such as iron, gold, or steel The gate at Veronica’s house is metal. The chair is metal. 2. Broken down – Broken down means not working or in very bad condition Veronica would never drive a broken down car. Archie drove his broken down car to school. 3. Hood – A hood is the metal covering over the engine on a car Check under the hood and see what that noise is. The hood of Archie’s car is always up. 4. Roof – a roof is the top part of a car or a building The cat was on the roof of the car. The roof of my car was wet. 5. Remove – Remove means to take off I can remove the roof of my convertible. Archie removed the top from his car. 6. Which – Which car is his? – The word, “which” asks a question. Which car is his? Which is used to ask about one member of a group of things. There was a group of cars and the girl asked Betty, “Which car is Archie’s car?” Which one of the cars is Archie’s? Which book are you looking for? Which color of ribbon should Betty wear in her hair? 7. Joker - A joker is someone who makes a lot of jokes (A joke - something that you say or do to make people laugh) Reggie is a joker. The joker made us laugh! COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS 1. What does Archie love having? 2. Why is the hood of Archie’s car up in frame three? 3. Where are the two girls and Reggie? Answers 1. Archie loves having a convertible. 2. The hood of Archie’s car is always up because Archie’s car is always broken down. 3. The two girls and Reggie are in Pop’s restaurant.
